Bordeaux

Château Grand Renom is located in Eynesse, on the edge of the Bordeaux wine-growing district and the Gironde department, just 60 kilometres east of Bordeaux.

The estate’s 36-hectare vineyards, perched at an altitude of 80 metres, are mainly composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, plus Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, for the production of white Bordeaux wines.

There are 3 main types of soil at Grand Renom. Clay-limestone soil on the hilltops, on a subsoil of fossil-rich limestone. Another section is composed of a mixture of silt, clay and sand, giving good balance to the soil. Finally, a fairly deep zone of clay on a subsoil of soft Agen sandstone. The soil retains water, making it available in limited quantities to the vines, thus maintaining hydric stress. This is perfect for grape quality and concentration in aromas and tannins.

Grand Renom’s subsoil carries a vein of fossil-rich limestone running through the middle of the soft Agen sandstone. These two geological formations, made from calcareous shells from around 30 million years ago, today form soft rock from which roots can draw nutritious trace elements.

Château Grand Renom is a blended wine. Deep purple in colour, with a fresh nose of crisp black fruit. A gourmet palate which confirms the fruity impression, enhanced by notes of vanilla, cinnamon and cloves.

Château Grand Renom Blanc is a dry white wine, dominated by Sauvignon Blanc. It offers an excellent and balanced touch of acidity, citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit) and pineapple. Ideal paired with seafood and white meat.

History

Château Grand Renom and its cellar were built in 1861 on hills rich in clay and limestone.
The Facca family, of Italian origin, settled on the estate and managed it for 3 generations. The land was divided between 4 different households, thus explaining the diversity of farming activities at the time: vineyards, cereals and cattle breeding.

Wine growing was extended over the entire property from the 1980s and 1990s onwards, following land consolidation. Bernard Moueix, great grandson of Antoine Moueix and owner of a trading company, bought Château Grand Renom in 1990.

A rich, diversified terroir

The 38-hectare vineyard is perched on the Dordogne hilltops, at 80 metres above sea level. Grand Renom’s subsoil carries a vein of fossil-rich limestone running through the middle of the soft Agen sandstone. These two geological formations, made from calcareous shells from around 30 million years ago, today form soft rock from which roots can draw nutritious trace elements.

Environmentally friendly viticulture

The vineyard is composed of 7 hectares of white grape varieties, with 6.5 hectares of Sauvignon and 50 ares of Muscadelles.

There are 31 hectares of red grape varieties, with 8 hectares of Cabernet Franc and 23 hectares of Merlot. The Grand Renom has relatively late soils, giving Merlot grapes the time to mature slowly. Cabernet Franc, a later maturing grape variety, is present in the earliest areas, for optimal maturing.

Particular care is given when tending the vineyard, with respect for the environment and terroir. The technical approach adopted for each plot is holistic, in line with production and maturity targets. 2 out of 3 rows are tilled for enhanced soil aeration and better water infiltration. To control flora and bring diversity, the estate is seeded in the autumn. Work on the vines culminates in plot by plot harvesting, according to the maturity levels of each terroir on the estate.

Vinification of White Wines

Whites are harvested at optimal maturity. The main objective is freshness and aromatic complexity. For this, we macerate on skins for 4 to 6 hours, depending on the quality of harvest and vintage. Juice is then slowly pressed at low pressure to extract only the very best. Tasting is carried out throughout the pressing process and juices are separated according to their quality levels. They are then fermented at 16 degrees to preserve aromatic quality and develop exotic fruit aromas. Wine is matured on lees with regular stirring for more fleshy fullness on the palate. Regular tasting maintains balance between acidity, roundness and bitterness. Wines are then bottled in the spring, protecting them from oxygen.

Vinification of Red Wines

Red wines are vinified plot by plot to preserve each typical terroir character in the vat. Grapes are then harvested on the plot with machine sorting, to bring only the better quality berries to the cellar. Juice fermentation is begun immediately, with pumping over to extract aromas, colour and tannins from the skins and pips. This technique offers very gentle extraction in order to preserve the purity of the fruit from our terroir. Fermentation maceration lasts for 2 to 3 weeks depending on the vintage. Pumping over extracts all the fruit from the grapes while keeping tannins smooth by preventing excessive tannic concentration. Vats are all thermo-regulated for optimal temperature control throughout the vinification and maturing processes. This technology provides enhanced technical precision for wine making.

Wines are then matured in stainless steel vats, or in one or two-wine barrels for the highest quality batches. This diversity preserves the purity and character of the fruit while in vats and its roundness and complexity during barrel maturing.

All our wines are prepared, filtered, bottled and labelled on the estate.
