Climatic conditions

Winter was, overall, cold and wet. Budburst took place in good conditions. Spring was extremely wet and rainy. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, flowering was fast, homogeneous, and free of shot berries. Sustained rainfall continued until early summer. Conditions were highly favourable for mildew development, which was controlled by work in the vineyard.

The summer ended with high temperatures and a lack of water, placing the vines under water stress. Tannin synthesis was consequently ideal. September was perfect for grape ripening.

Vintage presentation

The quality of the vintage and the advanced maturity of Cabernet Franc made it possible to isolate a very high quality plot for separate vinification. These highly concentrated grapes underwent several weeks of maceration before barrel maturing (still in progress). Barrels from three prestigious coopers (Saury, Ana Selection and Taransaud) were selected to enhance the wine.

From the vine to the glass

Maturity came relatively fast and tannins matured in good conditions, thanks to very sunny days and cool nights in September. Harvesting began earlier than usual on Grand Renom (on September 26th). Grapes were very concentrated, with fine acidity preserved by the Chateau’s clay-limestone soils. More pumping over and maceration made possible by the quality and quantity of tannins present in the wine. A woody ageing process supported the wine’s tannic structure.

Tasting

“Superb black red colour, very good black fruits nose, pure late summer fruits and naturally rich, really good purity and depth, the grape showing very well, still a bit edgy/green, but very good future 2020-28.” Note de dégustation de Steven Spurrier 17,5/20 and 92/100
